Three months after the abrupt resignation of former CEO Patrick P. Gelsinger, Intel Corporation announced today the appointment of Lip-Bu Tan (chinses name: 陈立武) as its new Chief Executive Officer. This groundbreaking decision marks Tan as Intel's first Chinese-American CEO in its 56-year history, completing a trifecta of Chinese leadership in U.S. semiconductor giants alongside Jensen Huang (CEO of NVIDIA) and Hock E. Tan (CEO of Broadcom).
Frank Yeary, Independent Chair of Intel's Board of Directors, emphasized Tan's qualifications: "Lip-Bu is an exceptional leader whose technology industry expertise, deep relationships across our product and foundry ecosystems, and proven track record of creating shareholder value is exactly what Intel needs. Throughout his distinguished career, he has consistently demonstrated three critical strengths: customer-centric innovation, market-winning solutions, and the ability to build high-performance cultures."
During his tenure as CEO of Cadence Design Systems from 2009 to 2021, Tan spearheaded the company's transformation and cultivated a customer-centric innovation culture. Under his leadership, Cadence doubled its revenue, improved operating margins, and saw its stock price surge over 3,200%. He brings deep familiarity with Intel, having collaborated with the company while managing Cadence and serving on Intel's board from 2022 to 2024.
Before founding venture capital firm Walden International in 1987, Tan held managerial positions at EDS Nuclear and ECHO Energy and served as a partner at Walden USA Investment Fund. Under his leadership, Walden International's assets under management grew from 20 million to 2 billion by 2021.
Following the official announcement of Mr. Tan's appointment as CEO, Intel's shares surged 11% in after-hours trading, underscoring market confidence in his leadership capabilities.
